Three Reasons Why Personal Development Courses Don’t Work

“What’s the deal!?” you must be thinking. You’ve spent hours and hours reading self-help books, listening to motivational speakers, and taking “personal development courses.” After all this time and money, the problems just don’t go away!!. “Why?” you ask, “Where did I go wrong?”

Relax. For the next few minutes relax and stop thinking about all the wrong things. The fact is you CAN succeed where you haven’t succeeded before. You CAN get rid of your problems. You CAN have all those things that all the self-help books say you can have. But you have to approach your own personal development wisely.

Why don’t they work? Why don’t the self-help books and personal development courses work?

You may not like the reasons. But if you understand why something doesn’t work, then you’ll have a better understanding of how it can work. I.e. the right personal development course with the right perspective can do wonders for you. Ready?

Personal development courses fail to help many people for many reasons. Here are three of them:

  1. They weren’t meant to help. Many personal development courses were not designed to help you.. Have you noticed that self-help authors write more than one book. They write book after book because people like you and me buy their books. The same with motivational speakers. People buy their stuff because they’re interesting to read and listen to. But rarely do they contain anything that is life-changing.
  2. You lack the power to focus. Put another way, you are too easily distracted. So you never really complete a self development course strictly according to its instructions. Somewhere between the first chapter and the last chapter, you turned your attention away from self-help and went to more familiar territory. To succeed at anything, especially self development, you need to focus on that one thing and be committed to doing it.
  3. Changing habits is the hardest thing in the world to do. The deep deep reason you got into self-help and personal development is that you have habits that keep you where you don’t want to be. Breaking these habits and replacing them with better habits takes time and personal committment. After all, acquiring the bad habits took a long time. Give your self time to overcome the bad habits. That is what personal development is really about; changing your habits to change the outcomes in your life.

In short, many self-help books and personal development courses are great for temporary motivation, but that’s all. They’re not going to change your life in the 7 or 8 days it takes to go through them. The main reason that books and courses don’t work, however, is because people are not committed enough to working on the changes they want.

The solution lies with you. Before you invest time and money in another self-development course of any kind, ask yourself some questions first:

  • What problem(s) do I want to solve?
  • How badly do I want to sove this problem (these problems)?
  • What do other people say about this particular self development program? Do they actually make personal progress?
  • Am I ready to do what it takes to change my life for the better?

Remember this: You CAN do it. You CAN succeed. You CAN be whatever you want, but you have to make the commitment to change. Then and only then can any personal development course help you.
